Project Duration

Spiral Wound installer, Southwest Pipeline & Trenchless, completed a sewer rehabilitation project for the City of West Hollywood, CA. The project was originally specified and bid as a CIPP lining project. However, one of the line segments on the project presented several constructability challenges that required additional engineering review.

Challenging Application

The project location was the first challenge. The pipe segment was located on San Vicente and Melrose Avenues; a densely populated area anchored by the Pacific Design Center and numerous upscale restaurants. One of the access manholes was located in the middle of the intersection. Not only would this require extensive traffic control, the project had to be done between the hours of 11 PM and 6 AM and no flow by-passing would be allowed. Furthermore, the pipe invert was in poor condition. There was high groundwater along with active I/I coming in through the laterals which complicated the rehabilitation approach even further.

Based on these installation challenges, the contractor determined that CIPP would not be a good option for this location and proposed using SPR™EX PVC Spiral Wound liners. SEKISUI SPR worked with the City of West Hollywood and the contractor to verify that our liners were fit for purpose and could meet both the design and constructability challenges on this project. This included the ability to install liners in live flow without any flow bypassing.

Converted to SPR™EX

Based on the information provided, the City approved Spiral Wound liners to be used on this line segment. 310 feet of 8” pipe was successfully rehabilitated in December 2019.

Southwest Pipeline was able to set up traffic control, do pre-lining CCTV, install SPR™EX liner, do post-lining CCTV and reinstate laterals within the restricted construction time frame. Since SPR™EX is a mechanically installed lining system, the City did not have to field any complaints from residents or businesses about styrene or chemical odors that are a by-product of the CIPP installation process.
