Types of Structural Pipelining

Spiral Wound Lining

The first method on our list is Spiral Wound Lining. This repair technique forms a continuous strip of PVC profile into a fully structural liner by using machinery. Mechanical Spiral Wound lining meets the material and installation standards detailed in ASTM F1697-18 and ASTM 1741-18. As stated in the ASTM, Spiral Wound can be designed for fully deteriorated and partially deteriorated applications. For fully deteriorated, the PVC liner is designed to resist all applied loads since the existing pipe is not structurally sound. Spiral Wound Lining can be completed with minimal impact on the surrounding environment and does not require chemicals to solidify the new pipeline.

CIPP

Another structural pipeline solution is Cured In Place Pipelining (CIPP). This trenchless repair method consists of installing a resin-impregnated tube inside an existing pipe. The tube is cured, resulting in a rigid and structural liner. CIPP follows standards such as ASTM F1216-16 and ASTM F1743-17. These provide guidelines regarding proper installation and requirements for fully deteriorated applications. CIPP offers structural lining solutions for both gravity and pressure pipeline applications.

Pipe Bursting

The next structural pipeline solution is pipe bursting. Using a bursting head, the existing pipeline is eliminated and a new pipe is inserted in the void. This new pipe is often High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE). With the HDPE system being new and completely replacing the old line, the pipe must be structural and capable of withstanding the load the previous pipe handled. One of the benefits of this particular pipeline repair method is the opportunity to upsize the pipe, which is unique for trenchless pipe lining.

Slip-Lining

Another structural lining method is sliplining. Sliplining slides a flexible, slightly reduced diameter pipe within the existing pipe. The space between the liner and pipe is grouted. Sliplining offers fully structural renewal with the new pipe material as HDPE, PE, FRP or even PVC.

Structural vs. Non-Structural Pipelining

A fully structural solution forms a singular, stand-alone, pipe that is capable of handling all applied loads (such as soil, surcharge or live loads) within the current system. The finished liner will not need the additional support of the existing line. The goal of this repair solution is to essentially negate the structural reliance for the old pipeline.

Nonstructural methods serve as preventative maintenance, or corrosion protection, to an existing pipe, without extending its useful life. This includes point or spot repairs that may assist with factors such as hydraulics or corrosion. However, this adds no structural support.
